Welcome to Hamlet, an interpretation as novel
This started as a
project for school, more specifically, for English Literature, at Lilydale
High School. We were told to choose an activity to complete, based on the texts
we have been studying throughout the year. We have decided that we want to
rewrite Shakespeare's famous play, Hamlet, into a novel form. This is the
mission statement we submitted with the project:
As our extended response, we decided to embark on the ambitious goal to
rewrite Shakespeare's Hamlet.
We are rewriting Hamlet in the form of novel, written in the third person. We
chose to write in novel form to give us the greatest scope for exploration of
characters and situations. We wrote in the third person for much the same
reasons; we could explore each character as needed without creating a bias. The
third person also gave us an opportunity to create a written play, the third
person being the audience watching Hamlet.
We are writing the story to be easily understood, but keeping as true to
Shakespeare's story as possible. Our rewrite is targeted at a broad audience, as
it could be used as both a study aid for students studying Hamlet, or as
a story which can open Hamlet to audiences who are not willing to decrypt
Shakespeare's language. In targeting these audiences, the importance of a
correct interpretation is made stronger, and we will use various resources to
ensure that our interpretation is as correct as possible.
We have no immediate goals in length for the rewrite, but our current estimate
shows that we will complete it at approximately 55,000 - 65,000 words. As our
writing continues this may increase or decrease, but our goal of completing a
successful rewrite of Hamlet will remain. We will keep a daily journal of our activity on the project (which
will be posted on the 'progress' page) and as we finish sections of
the play, they will be posted in the 'read' section of the site.
